Allow me to [re]introduce myself...
Sara Beth Brooks (she/they) is a white, queer, and disabled artist and activist living on unceded Nisenan Miwok land, colonially known as Sacramento, CA. She is a self-taught poet and teaching artist whose work has appeared in Rogue Agent, Breath & Shadow, Tiny Spoon Literary Magazine, Big Windows Review, & elsewhere. Their self-published zine IN BLOOM (2024) explores living as a disabled person during the beginning of the pandemic. Her writing interrogates ordinary disabled experiences and confronts ableism in systemic and interpersonal relationships. She was a 2025 resident at Seventh Wave and a 2025 fellow at The Heart of It. Sara Beth is working on her first manuscript.
Sara Beth has been involved in community organizing for 25 years, working on queer rights, disability justice, and anti-war movements. They are deeply committed to cultural work, mutual aid, civil disobedience, subversive art, legislative advocacy, and public protest. She has a passion for embodied practice that led her to become a certified yoga and meditation teacher. She received her trauma-informed foundational training from Collective Resilence in 2023 and completed Susanna Barkataki’s Yoga Class Curator in 2024. Sara Beth is becoming certified in Yoga Nidra with Soma Yoga Institute in 2025. Their Self Care Sundays for Tender Hearts series helps provide grounding and self-care options in an overwhelming world. She continues to study non-violent communication and mindfulness meditation as vehicles for liberation.
Sara Beth received the Harvey Milk Leadership Award, the Lambda Archives Youth Trailblazer Award, and the Campus Pride Voice & Action Award for work on LGBTQIA+ issues. They have spoken on college campuses including University of Southern California and University of Pennsylvania. Sara Beth was twice a guest of the Obama White House to discuss LGBTQIA+ inclusion policies. She was president of the Sanford I. Berman Debate Forum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies.
